Donors and Partners

Developers generally donate to general-purpose local community benefit funds as well as to Windfall, often managed through Town and Community Councils. What is different about Windfall is that the money explicitly amplifies the developers’ own intention to address the climate crisis, through community action.

Donors usually enter into an agreement with the Planning Authority concerned, and then also co-create an agreement with Windfall concerning the detail. In the past we have had donations from operators of Landfill sites as well as from energy generators.

Currently Montgomeryshire is the beneficial area, because our current donor is Amegni Ltd, owner of Carno Wind Farm. However, we are available to appropriate developers anywhere in Mid Wales, so get in touch if you are planning an investment in this wider area.

Carno Wind Farm has been developed in two stages. Amegni now owns both developments, but originally the community benefit money from ‘Carno 1’ was routed to Windfall via Powys County Council.

Amegni is unusual in being locally owned and controlled, in this case by the farmers concerned. This significantly increases the financial benefit to the local economy and the viability of the agricultural community.

Community or ‘Shared’ Ownership is a different model that maximises local benefit, typically involving an offer to buy shares. The Welsh Government Energy Service can support developers and community bodies in creating such agreements.

Windfall is helping Mid Wales become more resilient and less polluting, alongside much bigger bodies such as those involved in ‘Growing Mid Wales’.
